Christy and Corrine,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was always a nice man. You will be in my thoughts.
I grew up across the street from Mr. Jahnke and his 2 daughters on Easter Road. I can't remember him without a smile. Even through times that were tough, he kept a positive outlook and that smile that I will never forget. After my family moved away, years later I moved back and bought a house in Palmetto Bay. While having our cable and phone installed, a manager was needed to supervise. I couldn't have been happier when I saw Mr. Jahnke walking up my driveway with that smile! He made sure I was well taken care of and even had the technician hide the cables between 2 tiles and grout over them. Not many people care enough to be that kind. The loss of such an incredibly kind, loving and honorable man like Walter Jahnke is of course a painful loss to his friends and family but also a tremendous loss to the world!
For many years, Walt and I were friendly radio contest competitors. Despite the competition, we always shared contest information with one another. I once told him about the Publix/Pepsi Rule the Road Sweepstakes. Walt entered daily and won a trip to the Daytona 500. I didn't get the chance to give him my choice between 1, 2 & 3 to pick to win the loaded Monte Carlo. Somehow, he chose the number I wanted (3) and proceeded to win the car. I was almost as happy as he was. We never felt badly if the other won a contest prize. I now feel badly for his loss in the game of life. Walt was a great family man and friend. He will be missed. After a lengthy battle, he can now rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.
Walter was kind and genuine man with a great sense of humor. We became neighbors in 2009 and he welcomed Rolando and I to the neighborhood. He was always willing to help, share joke and the occasional cocktail. He became family in our hearts and we will miss him greatly.
