My family and I have been blessed to have known Clay, Hilda, Eric and Mark for well over 20 years since Mark and our son Michael went to school together and have remained the closest of friends. Clay was an amazing person who lit up a room with his joyous and witty personality. He was a brilliant attorney and teacher, who not only helped a diverse client base, but also provided invaluable instruction and experience to numerous students, young attorneys and just people who needed work (even if he really didn't need their services). He was also a volunteer coach for many kids that enjoyed his instruction and outgoing personality.
His greatest accomplishment; however, was in his devotion to family, including Hilda, Eric and Mark, as well as his parents, siblings, in-laws, nephews and nieces. I greatly admired how he was able to balance his work and family life, but if you know his family, you would understand why this was so important. Like Clay, Hilda is a kind and wonderfully caring person who has given so much of her life to help others in addition to raising great kids. Eric and Mark are bright, respectful and generous persons who have learned to enjoy life with the same passion as Clay and devote time to many of the same interests that Clay had. In fact, Mark has started to provide year-in-review letters with the same perspective and wit as his dad.
We always looked forward to receiving Clay's letters because they demonstrated a genuine love of family and life. From his most recent letters, one would never know the pain and suffering he was experiencing in dealing with his debilitating disease because it was not in his nature to complain about such things when there were so many other beautiful experiences to be thankful for.
In my life, I have interacted with a diverse number of people from all types of backgrounds but only a rare few have left such a deep impression as Clay. His loss is very significant because he touched so many people with his kindness, intellect, wit and compassion. Now God gets to enjoy these qualities from Clay in heaven.
We thank God for introducing us to, and benefitting from, the friendship of Clay and the Reiner family. We pray that God provides comfort, healing and emotional support to Hilda, Eric, Mark, Rebekah and other members of his family. May God bless them and bring them peace.
