Norman C. Kassoff's Obituary
Norman C. Kassoff, a public servant, devoted family man, and cherished member of the Miami community, passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2025, at the age of 94. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Norman was married to the late Carolyn Kassoff for 62 years. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising their children Beryl Sue Kassoff-Correia (Claudio) and Mark Kassoff (Lisa), and later welcoming grandchildren Logan Kassoff (Shelby) and Kara Kassoff Taylor (Mark), and great-grandson Mark Pierce Taylor.
Born on September 4, 1930, in Tarrytown, New York, to Esther and Richard Kassoff, Norman lived a life defined by service, leadership, and curiosity. After contracting polio as a child, his parents moved the family to Florida, where he graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School and went on to play baseball on a scholarship at the University of Miami, where he was president of his fraternity, Pi Lambda Phi, before earning his degree in law. Norman also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
In addition to his esteemed career as a Miami Dade homicide detective and police academy instructor, Norman was deeply committed to education and professional development within the field of law enforcement. He served as Supervisor of the Police Training Unit at the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Washington, D.C., where he played a vital role in enhancing law enforcement training programs nationwide. Norman's dedication to education extended to his role as an instructor, shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals. His efforts in training and mentorship left a lasting impact on the law enforcement community, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. He published several articles and books in the field of criminal justice.
As the Director of Operations at the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office under Dr. Joseph H. Davis, Norman played a pivotal role in managing the department's daily functions and addressing the challenges posed by Miami's escalating crime rates during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The surge in drug-related violence during this period led to a significant increase in homicides, straining the resources of the Medical Examiner's Office. Norman's responsibilities extended to managing staff, coordinating with law enforcement agencies, and overseeing the implementation of procedures to handle the increased workload. His leadership was instrumental in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the Medical Examiner's Office during these tumultuous times.
Norman had a distinguished career in emergency response and forensic operations. He held the distinct honor of working at Ground Zero in New York City following the September 11, 2001 attacks, where he contributed to the task of disaster victim identification. His involvement came through FEMORS (Florida Emergency Mortuary Operations Response System), a state-level organization that provides expert support during mass fatality incidents.
Norman was a member of the Rotary Club of Miami, serving as its president and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedicated service. He also held the position of Polio Plus Chair for his Rotary district, contributing significantly to polio eradication efforts. He also served as president of the Antique Automobile Club, where he combined his love for vintage cars and community engagement.
In his personal life, Norman was a bird watcher, a passionate aficionado of art, music, and history, and an avid reader. His life was a blend of service, intellect, and deep cultural appreciation. He found companionship and joy in his dogs, and was known for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness.
Norman’s legacy is one of integrity, intellect, and enduring dedication to others. His contributions to his community and his profession will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
