LEWIS R. SAYRE JR.'s Obituary
Lewis Sayre, 75, of Miami, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. He was born in Miami on the 24th of May, 1941 to Lewis and Beulah Mae. He graduated from Miami High School in the class of 1960 (Go Stings!) and attended Stetson University. Professionally, he enjoyed a long and successful career in the health and safety industry, where he worked for the American Red Cross, the Safety Council and the Florida Department of Transportation. He taught boating and water safety, CPR, HIV/AIDS safety and prevention and was at the forefront of traffic safety in the state of Florida. His life's work truly was about helping others.
He was at home in the water, a scuba tank on his back, fins on his feet and diving for lobster. Often he would be shrimping or spear fishing. He loved working on any number of cars. If it was the weekend and you stopped by the Sayre household, Lew was likely bowed under a raised hood, standing over an engine. And he was always happy when Miami High was beating Edison (Go Stings!) and if the Dodgers were winning. But above all else he valued moments spent with friends and family. Every holiday, every vacation and family gathering was dear to him. Such as it was with the beloved weekly lunches he would attend, in the later years of his life, with his fellow Stingarees, at which, it has been said, he was the "voice of reason."
Lewis is survived by his two sons, Richard and David, and his sisters, Charlotte Sue Hansen and Cecile Mae Drumm, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Lew's life will be held at the Van Orsdel Kendall Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 13th. A 10:00 AM visitation will be followed by a service at 12:00 PM.
