Joseph J. Zavertnik's Obituary
ZAVERTNIK, JOSEPH J., M.D., 91, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Joe, a proud veteran of WW II, was born on November 9, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Engelwood, New Jersey where he became an Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Medical School. After continuing training at Duke University and Memorial Hospital in New York, he came to practice in Miami as the area's first head and neck surgeon in 1952. A longtime parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where he was very active over the years, he was also involved with Christopher Columbus High School. He spent many years working with the American Cancer Society locally and was State president and a member of the organization's national board. Joe is survived by his beloved wife Helen "Bunny", sons Joseph (Donna), John (Linda) James, Thomas (Sheryl), grandchildren Michael (Jenn), Timothy (Kristen), Kelly (fiancé Eric), Katherine (fiancé Matt), Brian, Robby, Joseph, Kristen, Mark, Mary Elyse, great-grandchildren Caleb, Nolan and Tierney and sister Laverne Waterstreet (John). A viewing will be held tonight Thursday, June 24, 2010 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church from 5:30pm to 7:30pm with a Mass of the Resurrection at 7:30pm.
