I remember Dr. Zavertnik as a tall, slim young man in his 30's. I was 17 in 1954 when Dr. Zavertnik operated on my father - who had throat cancer. In those days - when a person had cancer - the insurance was usually dropped. We had very little money - my mother worked; my sister and I had jobs after school. 'young Dr. Zavertnik' was the kindest person I have known. I will never forget him - though it has been over 50 years since my father passed away in 1955. Mama still owed about $6,000. in doctor and hopsital bills. Dr. Zavertnik - came to my Dad's funeral (can you imagine that?)He told Mama to 'forget' the bill. He came to the house several times and did what he could to make Daddy comfortable in the hospital bed we had at home. May God bless his memory. In all these I still remember him and revere his name.
'Thank you Doctor."
