One of my favorite memories of Jean (and there are many), was visiting her during her recuperation after she had fallen and damaged her knee. On my way to see her I thought that I’d see Jean in a chair in the TV room, but instead, when I got to the house Jean was in her garden tending to her trees and telling me that the ackee tree would soon bear fruit. After our horticultural conversation, Jean stayed on her feet and proceeded to the kitchen to teach me how to cook shrimp in shredded coconut. Looking back that was a beautiful Jean Steer moment. Her friendship shone through. She faced her illness with bravery, and never felt sorry for herself. She always wanted to share something with you, to embrace your humanness and she knew a good a joke when she heard it. Her laughter was infectious. I’ll miss Jean in a very significant way, but I’m glad she came into my life and brightened many of my days.
To the family, I’ll tell you what Jean told me when I talked to her about the fears I have of losing loved ones – “Life goes on,” she said. For those of us that knew her, the best thing we can do is cherish Jean’s memory and be happy that we have those memories for a lifetime. Love never dies.
