HENRY WARREN KUNCE's Obituary
The Reverend Doctor Henry Warren Kunce passed away at the age of 88 on October 10, 2013, in South Miami-Dade, Florida.As a Presbyterian minister, his unceasing support for the civil rights movement and his remarkable compassion, concern and love for others is his legacy.He was married to Avon Estes Kunce for 65 years. Henry was born to Ralph Waldo and Mabel Enid Warren Kunce in St. Louis, Missouri, His grandfather, and name sake, Henry Earnest Warren, and grandmother, Minnie Lee Tyree, were notable influences in Henry’s early life. After his military service, Henry pursued his academic interests and obtained five degrees, including in engineering, theology and psychology. As staunch advocate of civil rights, this Presbyterian minister established and integrated a new church Southminster Presbyterian Church in Miami when he and his moved to South Florida in the 60's. Henry was a supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr., participating in the March on Washington in which Reverend King delivered the “I have a Dream,” speech. In addition, Dr. King came to meet with Henry and local clergy in Miami.With his background in engineering and mathematics, Henry transitioned into a second career working for Metro Dade Fire Department as chief systems engineer, even strategizing the color change of the ladder trucks from red to green - the eye registered the neon green hue easily.A mathematician at heart, he earned his PhD in psychology from the University of Miami and launched the psychoanalytical consulting firm, Sociocybernetics. Henry taught math and statistics at UM and at St. Thomas University, as adjunct professor. Henry and Avon had been active at Riviera Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables where Henry had been known to perform guest sermons - always dotted with his quirky humor and deep insightfulness.
In addition to his wife, Avon, Henry is survived by their 5 children: Catherine Avon Hilton; Nancy Lynn Evers, Christopher Warren Kunce, Cynthia Tyree Kent and James Breckinridge Kunce; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.Services for Henry Warren Kunce will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at 2 pm at the Riviera Presbyterian Church at 5275 Sunset Drive, Coral Gables, Florida 33143.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Riviera Presbyterian Church Prayer Garden and sent to the address above.
