I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Ford. He was a wonderful teacher, and just a really nice person in general. My condolences to the family.
Herb and I were both members of the Math/Science department at MAST Academy. We were not friends but I remember him to be a soft-spoken, friendly, conscientious colleague. Also, I remember Herb asked me if I would like to be a rowing team assistant coach, something I knew nothing about. When I told him that I had zero experience, he complimented me by telling me that my lack of experience was secondary to the fact that he observed that I related well to the students. That was about 25 years ago and I still remember that conversation.
My condolences to Herb's family.
One of my fondest memories was he challenged our class to find an error in the math book. He was confident there wasn't one. If we found an error we would get $100. I found an error in the book, he confirmed after 3 days it was wrong and I never got my $100. LOL.. I learned many lessons and he will be missed
Mr. Ford, Coach, was the nicest most soft spoken, dear man. I graduated from MAST in 1996 and that year I was failing whatever God awful math he was trying to teach me. He called my Mom in secret, she went into the garage to speak to him. He told her I was failing but he was going to pass me to not affect graduation but to not tell me so I keep trying. I have never forgotten that kind gesture. I was so worried. I dont know to this day if my efforts paid off or he really did have to give me C but it doesn't matter. I am grateful to him and so was my Mom 😆. REST IN PEACE COACH FORD!
The Friedman family was so sad to hear of Mr. Ford's passing. While chatting (as a chaperone) on one of my son's Mast Academy's crew team trips, we discovered that he had taught me Geometry at Key West HS in 1965! He also taught both my son (Brian) and daughter (Rebekah) at Mast Academy. He was a true gentleman - he will be missed.
