Captain Donald Davenport, USMMC, a scholar and a man who loved conversation and was always hospitable and a ready volunteer with his wife, Maria. His son, Raymond, has fond memories of weekly dinners out and about, all over the East Bay Area and find those treasures that may (or may not have been written about in the Chronicle). Captain Don was a golfer, philanthropist, a student of naval and aviation history, a man of quiet and generous spirit. He revered the service and his lifelong friends. He loved to recall his travel to far flung locations, traveling on the Concorde, the QEII, and the journey on the road to Santiago, pilgrim style. He was a man of few words, but deep feeling. He loved his children and grandchildren. He and his wife Maria built a life of stewardship, supporting their community and the Saint Andrews Church in El Cerrito, California. Their lifelong (anonymous) contributions rebuilt a community outside Port au Prince, Haiti. Captain Davenport loved golf, was a member of Mira Vista Golf Club and enjoyed his twice weekly game. Grandpa Don in his later years was able to see his granddaughter, Marie-Claire follow in his footsteps as a golfer, winning junior tournaments with Pebble Beach Juniors golf.
A great friend, an aspirational gourmet cook, a husband to Maria ---- the kind of man who gave sage advice while talking about the 'old days'. He is remembered with humor and fondness, the kind of guy who could be the life of a party, enjoyed his red wine, history of seafaring and his family. He will be missed by all.
