Dr. William M. Awad Jr.'s Obituary
AWAD, Jr ,William M.., MD, PhD, Of Coral Gables, Florida passed away peacefully on September 6, 2013 after living for many years with cancer. He was born an American citizen in Shanghai, China in 1927 and lived there until the Japanese invaded on December 8, 1941. He spent time in a Japanese POW camp with his father and brother before coming to the USA as part of a prisoner exchange. He and his brother arrived alone. They lived with their grandparents until the family was reunited four years later.
He was graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical School, where he met his late first wife, Dr. Marilyn Wells. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from U Washington in Seattle. A professor of medicine and biochemistry at the University of Miami School of Medicine, he was the former director of the MD/PhD program there. Until his death he taught residents and fellows and conducted medical rounds. He was one of the longest serving members of the University Faculty Senate.
He is survived by his wife Dr. Josephine Johnson; his children Lily Awad, MD of Cambridge, MA and William M Awad, III, his wife Suzy; and his grandsons William IV, Ari, and Gabriel, all of Longmeadow, MA, as well as his brother Philip and his wife Ursula of Denver, CO; and his sister Mary Dyess and Harry Sobol of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be held at St. Augustine Church 1400 Miller Road, Coral Gables, FL on Thursday, September 12 at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.
A reception will be held at 5 p.m. at 171 Edgewater Drive, Coral Gables, FL.
