Wilfred Lai's Obituary
Wilfred Lai was born in Kingston, Jamaica on July 7, 1936 to William and Alice Lai. He attended St. George’s College where he played Manning Cup Football and was a pole vaulter. He married his wife, Madeline and they moved to Miami where they made a life together. In Miami he coached multiple soccer teams for AYSO for 11 years. His teams were very successful and won the Junior Olympic National Champions in 1986 and 1987.
Wilfred recently celebrated his 87th birthday. He enjoyed reminiscing with all of his lifelong friends and was filled with joy to spend time with his family and friends. Wilfred’s contribution to the Chinese Cultural Foundation was finding performers for the Chinese New Year Festivals which he took so much pride in for over 25 years.
Wilfred passed away on July 16, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Madeline; his granddaughters Madison and Ella; his siblings, Edward, Carmen and Winston and his many nieces, nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter, Kimberly; his sisters Mavis, Joyce and Victoria; and many beloved friends.
A viewing and service will be held on Monday, July 24th from 4-8pm at Van Orsdel Funeral Home (11220 SW 88th Street Miami FL 33176). The burial will be held at 12noon on Tuesday, July 25th at Woodlawn Park South Cemetery (11655 SW 117th Avenue, Miami FL 33186).
