WAYNE H DRAKE's Obituary
DRAKE, Wayne H., a 64 year resident of Coral Gables passed away on November 16, 2014 at the age of 90. Wayne was born in Hendersonville, NC on July 7, 1924 to the late William T. Drake and Mary Etta Middleton Drake. After graduating from Pompano High School, he served in the Army Air Corp (813th AAF) and had a distinguished and honorable military career. Shortly after WWII Wayne was employed in the airline industry as a professional flight engineer with Eastern, National and Pan American Airlines. Wayne was one of the original members of the Everglades Conservation and Sportsman Club and was passionate about wildlife and his property and private airstrip Calusa Ranch located within the Big Cypress National Preserve. His local activities included membership at the Coral Gables Country Club, Granada Presbyterian Church, City of Coral Gables Emergency Preparedness Committee and regular golfer at the Biltmore Golf Course. Survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Haydee O. Drake and four children, Terry Drake Chandler and husband James R. Chandler III, Pamela Drake Holmes, Wayne M. “Mitch” Drake and wife Jennie L. Drake and Cary W. Drake and wife Bonita Norman Drake. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Joe Boyd, Mason Drake, Michael Drake, Jessica Chynoweth, Joy Campbell, Austin Drake and W. Sterling Drake, plus nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to either the Veterans Association of America or Granada Presbyterian Church. Memorial service will be held at 3pm on Sunday November 23, 2014 at Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables and burial service at 2pm Tuesday afternoon at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
