Virginia Butler Pitts' Obituary
PITTS, VIRGINIA BUTLER, a quintessential Southern lady from Miam-a, has died at age 87. A long-time resident of Coral Gables, Virginia carried that distinction with grace and kindness. She observed first-hand the rich history of the area, riding horses down Miracle Mile and swimming at Tahiti Beach as a young woman. Born in Los Angeles in 1925, Virginia attended Coral Gables Elementary and Ponce de Leon High School, later studying in New York City, but her life was centered in Florida, living at various times in Leesburg, Orlando, and Sanibel Island before returning to Coral Gables. An avid collector of fish objets d'art, she made lasting friends who loved her company everywhere she went. She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Biba Zabowski, her many grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and all of her wonderful friends, especially Miss Collar. Sadly her two sons, Steven Straessley and Chauncey Andrew Pitts, and her granddaughter, Syndey Straessley, through illness, preceded her, as did her life's partner, Charles Herbert Pitts, who we all knew as Herbie. The Memorial Service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family would very much appreciate anyone's remembrances of Virginia's long and interesting life.
