Tully F. Dunlap's Obituary
DUNLAP
Tully, 92, a legendary figure in Miami and
Florida banking, died Saturday in La Belle. Mr. Dunlap, remembered
fondly by friends as a man of prudence, courage, faith and humor, was
one of the key figures in the advancement of regional and multi-state
banking and a member of numerous corporate and civic boards.
Born in Midland City, Alabama in 1916, Mr. Dunlap
studied accounting at night at the University of Miami while working
full-time at First National Bank of Miami, where he met Mary Doughton
Miller. Their marriage in 1939 would last 70 years until Mary’s
death in February.
A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr.
Dunlap helped start three banks: Riverside Bank, Midtown Bank and
Bank of Coral Gables. He later merged the three institutions into
SunTrust and became chairman of Sun Banks of Florida.
In 1977, he was named chairman of Florida National Bank,
and five years later became a director of Ellis Banking Corporation
and chairman of the company’s banks in Sarasota, Fort Myers and
Jacksonville. He finished his distinguished career as chairman of
the board of NCNB National Bank of Sarasota and a board member of
NCNB National Bank of Florida.
He is survived by his son, Miami attorney Robert F.
Dunlap; daughter Mary D. Peacock and son-in-law Lawrence Peacock,
both school teachers in Winter Haven; grandchildren Robert Tully
Dunlap, Lauren Mary Dunlap, Jake Franklin Peacock and Jennifer
Elizabeth Peacock.
Services Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Granada Presbyterian
Church in Coral Gables. Private entombment to follow at Woodlawn Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the church.
