THOMAS J STOKES's Obituary
Thomas J. Stokes died on August 21st, 2018, in Gainesville, GA. Thomas was born to the late John P. and Bertha Hendrix Stokes on July 9, 1918, in Pensacola, FL., and moved to Miami, FL with his family in 1922. He graduated from Miami High School, and attended Georgetown University. Thomas served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and married Frances Berry in 1946. They remained thereafter residents of Coconut Grove and Coral Gables until moving to Gainesville, GA in 2013. Thomas was preceded in death by Frances who died in 2014, after 68 years of marriage. Thomas is survived by his children, Dr. Thomas J. Stokes, Jr. of Auburn, AL; John M. Stokes and wife Carolyn Christopher Stokes of Nebo, NC; and Claudia C. Stokes of Clinton, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Anne Gray, David Stokes, Christopher Stokes, and Jessica B. Stokes, and four great grandchildren, Craig Gray Jr, Collins Gray, Thomas Stokes, and Caroline Stokes. Tom was an enthusiastic and dedicated husband, father, sailboat racer, and fisherman. He was a long time member of the Coral Reef Yacht Club, and the Rod and Reel Club in Miami. He was a lifelong Catholic. Visitation 6 - 8 pm Thursday September 13th at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES. Services will be held in Miami at Epiphany Catholic Church on 57th Avenue on September 14th, at 11:00 am, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
