THOMAS CANBY PIPER's Obituary
Thomas Canby Piper, 60, of Coconut Grove, passed away on September 9th after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Tom, a lifelong resident of South Florida, attended the Univ. of Miami and was an avid, passionate leader in the sailing community, and sailed competively throughout the world. He was a member of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and recent past Commodore. Tom served as Chairman of many sailing committees,was a member of Storm TrySail Club, and most proud of his Etchells Class family.
Professionally, his 32 year career at RB Grove Inc, culminated in ownership of the company.
He is survived by spouse Kristin Garrahan, daughters Lee Piper Burman (Andrew) and Kelly Piper, brothers W. Scott Piper III, M.D. (Mary) and Jon Piper (Nancy) and their families, and sister-in-law Gillette Piper. He was the son of the late Dr. William S. Piper II and Mary Piper.Tom was much loved and will be remembered for his kindness, gentle wisdom, bright-eyed smile, and passion for the sport of sailing.
A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church, on Wednesday, September 25, at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
