Sue Ellyn Allen Wood's Obituary
WOOD, SUE ELLYN ALLEN, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 surrounded by family. She was born on July 5, 1920 in Albany, Tennessee, the daughter of George Lee and Allie Moore Allen. Sue and her family moved to Miami in 1931 after her father lost the family's country store to the Great Depression. She and her sister, Dorothy, were driven by their older brother, George, who was 13 at the time, in the family's Model T from Tennessee. She attended Shenandoah Junior High and was a member of the graduating class of 1938 from Miami High. She attended the University of Miami when the school was referred to as the "Cardboard College" and located at what is now the soccer field of the Coral Gables Youth Center where she met her adoring husband Bill. Sue was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and active in school organizations. She was forced to leave the University during her senior year due to WW II to help support her family. Sue and Bill were married in New York City on March 31, 1943, following Bill's graduation from the Navy Officer Training School. They have resided in Coral Gables for the past 52 years where they raised their four children and were active members of the former First United Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables. Sue is survived by her husband of over 65 years, William L. Wood, daughters, Sue Ellyn Wood Fahs (Phil) and Marilyn Wood Butler (Jim), sons William B. Wood and Richard A. Wood (Elise), her loving sister, Dorothy A. Harder, grandchildren Kristen Fahs DiFrancesco (Zach) Kara Fahs, Christopher Butler (Katie), Brian Butler, Lindley Butler, Sara Wood, Alyssa Wood, Huntley Wood and Helen Wood, Great-grandchildren Caitlin Butler, Jack Butler, Elizabeth Butler and Colton Fahs Clevenger. She was predeceased by her brother, George Lee Allen, Jr., and cousin Juanita Elizabeth Renner. She will be dearly missed by her entire family. A Memorial Service will be held by family and close friends at Plymouth Congregational Church on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 2:00 pm, 3400 Devon Road, Miami, FL 33133. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in Sue's memory to the University of Miami Ring Theater or Catholic Hospice.
