STANLEY D STEARNS's Obituary
Stanley D. Stearns, of Key Biscayne, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at UM Hospital, at the age of 97. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Emily Speight Stearns, originally from Thomasville, Georgia, his brother John Stearns (Marguerite) of Boca Raton, Florida, his four sons, Stanley D. Stearns, Jr. (Judy) of Gig Harbour, Washington, and Houston, Texas, Eugene E. Stearns (Diana) of Key Biscayne, Frank A. Stearns (Gerda) of Superior, Wisconsin and Kenneth W. Stearns of Houston, Texas, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
He was born in Miami on February 23, 1916, as the second of four sons. His grandfather, Daniel Stearns had visited Dade County in 1898 as an officer in the United States Army, and returned with his family in 1903 to make it their home. In 1927, his father, Frank F. Stearns, started the City of Miami Planning Department where he was the Director until his retirement in 1954. His mother, also a native of South Florida, was Helen Conlon Stearns.
His oldest brother, F. Foster Stearns and his youngest brother, Robert Stearns predeceased him. His youngest brother was an officer in the US Army who lost his life in the war in Europe in 1945.
He enjoyed a forty year career with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company that began in 1938 and ended with his retirement in 1978. For most of that time, he was part of Southern Bell’s Engineering Department, planning telephone systems that were constructed throughout Dade County.
He was a devoted family man, who, until late in his life, was an active biker and swimmer, who countless mornings watched the sun rise over the beaches of Key Biscayne.
His family celebrated his life in a private service on Key Biscayne.
