SILVIA M LASTRA's Obituary
Silvia M. Lastra, 97, Miami, Florida, December 9, 2024
Silvia was born in Havana, Cuba and was married to Dr. Jesus L. Lastra (RIP) for 71 years. She left Cuba in 1960 fleeing the communist rule of Fidel Castro moving and living in Miami, New York City, Jacksonville, Los Angeles and Birmingham, Alabama.
She was a member of St. Kieran Catholic Church since 1970 and was active in the parish throughout the years including making the little curtains for the tabernacle when the church was first built. She washed the altar linens and made flower arrangements for the altar. She was a regular volunteer at a nursing home with her dear friend Sarita. She cleaned and cooked for the Sisters of Charity and cooked meals for the homeless at Camillus House. She loved to sew, knit, cook for family and friends, and made floral arrangements. She loved music, the theater, opera, and traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Silvia was preceded in death by her mother, Josepha, her father, Manuel, her sister Nereida, and brother Manolo.
She is survived by her children, Idalia (George Barket RIP), Teresa, loving son-in-law Dr. John Raffel and granddaughter Carolyn Black (Alexander Black).
She was dearly loved by her nephews and nieces, Ed Sanchez (Eileen Sanchez), Robert Gomez (Anna Gomez), Raul Gomez (RIP) (Grisel Gomez), Adriana Lopez and Rick Lopez (RIP) (Vicki Linder-Lopez).
Viewing is on Friday, December 13, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel at 4600 SW 8th Street.
Mass of Christian Burial at St. Kieran’s Catholic Church, 3605 S. Miami Avenue, Coconut Grove at 10 AM followed by internment at Woodlawn Park North Cemetery, 3260 SW 8th Street at 11:30 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
