SALLY J. VARLEY's Obituary
Sally Jean Varley, born Jean Sarah Semlear, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep early in the morning on Friday, October 16th, 2015 at the age of 90. She was born on March 17th, 1925 in Glen Rock, NJ, the daughter of Margaret and Harry Semlear.
Sally graduated from Ridgewood High School and Adelphi University School of Nursing. She was a member of the US Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. Afterwards, she worked for Doctor Lambert in NYC, who was a pioneer in ear surgery. She married the love of her life Richard Norcross Varley Sr on June 14th, 1947. After staying home with their three children, she resumed her nursing career as a home health nurse, including work with terminally ill patients, and was beloved by them all.
Sally’s kindness and heavenly spirit improved the lives of many people. She was a very generous person, whose positive outlook on life and bright smile endeared her to all who met her. She was always willing to help other people, and did often.
Sally loved music and dancing, even getting in a last dance in her deathbed. She also loved swimming and writing poetry, reading spiritual texts and reciting uplifting quotes. She was a member of the Glen Rock Community Church, and lived in Glen Rock with her husband Richard until moving to Florida in 2003, where they lived in The Villages before moving to Miami in 2013.
Sally is survived by her dear husband of 68 years, Richard Norcross Varley Sr., and her daughters Susan Lewis and Debra Sutherland; her son-in-law Scott Sutherland; her sister Barbara Kamstra (John Kamstra); her grandchildren Bryan Lewis, James Lewis, Debra Lewis (Lucas Jordan), and her great-granddaughter Theia Fay Jordan-Lewis. She was preceded in death by her son Richard Norcross Varley Jr. and her brother Robert Semlear.
Services were held in Miami, FL on Sunday October 18th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations in her name to Unity World Headquarters at Unity Village, and spiritual philosophical movement which she held very dear.
