SALLIE ANNE JENKS's Obituary
Sallie Anne Jenks (1935-2013) was born in Ashland, Ky. Sallie was living at Epworth Village when she passed away peacefully on February 5, 2013 after a 10 yr. gallant battle with Alzheimer’s. Sallie was born to the late Daniel Hugh Jenks, Jr. and the late Zoe Ellen Lashbrook Jenks in Ashland, Ky. on November 13,1935. Sallie graduated from Ashland Senior High School in 1953 and continued to be active with their alumni even after moving to Miami. Sallie graduated from Florida College of Medical Technology and was an Alumna of University of Miami. She served as President-College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association, U of M 1995-1996. She was elected “Volunteer of the Year” for that organization 1997-1998. Sallie was a Research Technologist at the National Children’s Cardiac Hospital 1956-1960. It was during that time that she co-authored several articles based on Rheumatic Fever Research that were published in professional journals. Sallie was a research technologist for both Department of Preventive Medicine and Division of Oral Biology U of M from 1960-1968.This experience prepared Sallie to be the “Quality Control Technologist”, Cordis Laboratories 1968-1984. She went on to service as “Health and Safety Officer”, Diamedix Corporation, (Div. of IVAX) until her retirement in 1998. Sallie was famous for her love of animals but her greatest love was for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She served Him through her church, First United Methodist of Coral Gables, in many capacities. She twice chaired the Administrative Board, Chaired Worship and Fine Arts, and Missions. She loved to sing alto in the Sanctuary church choir. She directed the “Fair to Middlin” ‘band’ for four years to raise funds for the outreach missions of the church. She was always a hit singing comedy songs in the “Wesley Minstrels” to raise funds for international missionaries. Sallie served as membership secretary for the church for five years. She loved serving others and in recognition of that service was listed in: “Personalities of the South”; “Who’s Who of American Women”; and “The World’s Who’s Who of Women”. One of Sallie’s greatest loves was serving the residents at “Chapman Partnership For The Homeless” which she did for over 15 years until her health became prohibitive. Sallie enjoyed being with her many friends in her chapter of P.E.O. and the Coral Gables Music Club. Sallie was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Sallie was predeceased by her brother Daniel Hugh Jenks III. She is survived by her sister Jackie Collins of Yuma, AZ, 2 nieces, 1 nephew, 6 grand nieces and nephews, and her wonderful classmates from Ashland Senior High School class of 1953. Sallie will be greatly missed by her friends from First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables and the community at large. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Fund and the Educational Assistance Fund of First United Methodist Church Coral Gables; or Chapman Partnership, attn.: Holly Woodbury, 1330 N. Miami Ave., Miami, Fl. 33136. Sallie’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service, Thursday, February 14th 5:00 PM at First United Methodist Church Coral Gables Sanctuary, 536 Coral Way, Coral Gables, Fl. (Right in back of Coral Gables City Hall). A reception will follow in Founder’s Hall.
