Rosalicia Shields' Obituary
Rosalicia Landry Shields passed away June 3, 2013 after valiantly fighting to come back from a fall where she sustained a spinal cord injury. She was born October 16, 1926 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. She spent her early years between Dominican Republic and New Orleans Louisiana where she graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican boarding school in 1943. With her mother and sister, Rosalicia moved to Miami in 1947, where she met our father, William Robert Shields. They were married in 1950, and settled in Coral Gables to raise their family.
She is survived by her three children and their families: Franzine Shields (Onelia Llagostera), Bill Shields (grandchildren Sarah and Jonathan), and Maureen Shields (Richard Hunt); her sister Ada L. Martin and nephew Forrest Martin (Andrea Teitlar and son Jacob Teitlar).
Notes from her children …
Mom was a homemaker and loving mother to us three children. She was also a devoted daughter, and cared for her mother and other family members as she was needed over the years. Mom was selfless and totally devoted to loving and caring for her family - that is what made her happiest.
Our mother was able to make those she met feel special as well - made them smile and look forward to seeing her. We have heard this from so many people that knew her, whether a long-time or a brief acquaintance. We greatly appreciate everyone expressing these wonderful sentiments to us.
Our family is having a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation may be made. The foundation is a resource of valuable information for people who have suffered a spinal cord injury, and for their families.
Please feel free to express your sentiments on this site on the Tribute Wall as well.
