Dr. Robert F. Liebler D.M.D.,P.A's Obituary
Dr. Robert F. Liebler was born in Greenwich, CT in 1926 to Francis Marks Liebler and Harold Baxter Liebler, an Episcopal Priest and grew up in both Greenwich, CT and Ft. Pierce, FL. As a young child he enjoyed sailing his boat named “Donald Duck” and playing with his dog Tanto. He sailed in the Long Island Sound, near Connecticut in the summers and the Indian River near Ft Pierce, FL in the colder months. While in Ft Pierce, he took painting lessons from the now famous A.E. “Beanie” Backus, which started his life-long love affair of oil painting.
In 1939, at the age of thirteen, he traveled with his dad Father Liebler and family out west. Father Liebler was in search of starting a ministry to the Navajo Nation. This initial exploration trip and a later trip, led Father Liebler to minister to the Navajo people and to establish St. Christopher’s Episcopal Mission Church with a much-needed school and medical clinic in Bluff, UT and after retiring, Father Liebler established St. Mary of the Moonlight Episcopal Mission Church in Oljato-Monument Valley, UT. Robert admired Father Liebler’s love of the Lord and willingness to serve him.
Robert graduated from the New York Military Academy in 1944 and enlisted into the US Army as an Infantryman. Upon completing his Army training at Camp Croft, S.C. he was sent via troop transport ship to the European theater, and served in Belgium, France, and Germany during World War II.
After the liberation of Europe, Robert returned to the United States and became a pre-law student at New York University. During an internship with a large law firm Robert said “I decided being an attorney was not for me”. Knowing Robert liked making model airplanes, his dentist suggested he consider dentistry. Robert took two years of basic science at the University of Miami and became a physics lab instructor after excelling in that course.
In 1956, Robert graduated from Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA and was invited to teach at the University of Alabama College of Dentistry in Birmingham, AL, where he taught for a few years.
At the urging of his brother John, he moved back to Miami, FL and took over the office of a retiring dentist and then established a successful dental practice in South Miami, FL. He remained a dentist for over 60+ years in Miami-Dade County. Eventually, retiring as a professor at the age of 92 at the University of Florida Dental Center, in Hialeah, FL.
Robert was proud to be part of the Christian Dental Society and volunteered at Community Smiles, a humanitarian clinic, and received an award for 50 years of humanitarian service. Robert and his wife Janice, a hygienist, served the Lord on numerous overseas Christian dental mission trips to multiple orphanages in Ukraine, Romania, and Christian Dental Clinics in Isreal which treated Christians, Jews, and Palestinians. He was also member of the Son’s of the American Revolution, American Legion, past President of the Florida Academy of General Dentistry, and other organizations.
