Richard W. Gray, Jr, 87, Son of City Pioneer Richard W. Gray, Sr.
Richard W. Gray, Jr., who was born here in 1923, died Saturday in New Milford, CT after a long illness. His father opened the Weather Bureau Office in Miami in 1911, and became part of Miami history during the 1926 Hurricane that devastated Miami and Dade County.
Richard W. Gray, Jr. was a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel and served in both World War II and Korean War. He was also a long-time Miami-Dade County educator having taught at Ponce de Leon Junior High School and Coral Gables Senior High School. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of Florida and attended the University of Miami Doctoral Program. Between World War II and the Korean War, he was on the faculty of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
Visitation services will be held at Van Orsdel Coral Gables, on Wednesday, December 8, from 6-8pm. A mass will be offered on Thursday, December 9, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Theresa, Church of the Little Flower, in Coral Gables. He will be buried at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery next to his wife of 28 years, Joan LeBlanc Gray, who died in 1980. Mr. Gray is survived by his son, Richard W. Gray III, who resides in Miami Beach. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Buoniconti Fund – Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
