RICHARD VERNON's Obituary
Richard Vernon, devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and pillar of the Key Biscayne community, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Born October 2, 1931, in Newark, New Jersey, Richard’s life reflected service, sacrifice, and family. At 18, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War as a radarman aboard the USS Lyman K. Swenson. His experiences at sea instilled the courage, perseverance, and Patriotism that guided him throughout his years. Following his service, Richard pursued a career in pharmacy, graduating first in his class from the University of Florida. Settling on Key Biscayne, he owned and operated Vernon’s Pharmacy for over four decades, becoming a fixture in the island community. More than a business, the store became a gathering place where his humor, warmth, and steady presence touched countless lives. It was there he met Jane, his great love, with whom he built a life rooted in loyalty and tradition — raising a family and turning their home into a haven of laughter and love. To his grandchildren, he was “Grampie” — a larger-than-life figure with a cigar in hand, a sparkle in his eye, and a story always at the ready. To his family, he was a source of strength and devotion. To his community, he was a man whose word meant something, whose presence could be counted on, and whose character reflected the values of his generation. He will be deeply missed, but his stories, his lessons, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. Richard is survived by his two children: Debi and Robert. His daughter-in-law Thania. His five grandchildren: Jorge, Christine, Shane, Jenna, and Conner. And seven great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Olivia, Mila, Sienna, Matty, Luca, and Lena.
