PRISCILLA R HELMERS's Obituary
Priscilla Roebling Helmers died on August 18, 2023. Born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 4, 1923 she was a true Miami pioneer, arriving in South Florida with her parents Frank and Betty Roebling in 1924. Priscilla celebrated her first birthday in Miami, attended Miami Edison Senior High School and graduated from the University of Miami in 1945. She was a proud Miami Hurricane and member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, the Gov. John West chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists, the Everglades chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Miami Pioneers.
Priscilla married Leonard (Len) Helmers in 1946 and settled in Miami Springs where their two sons Lenny (Karen) and Terry (Ann) were born. She and Len spent several years as enthusiastic leaders in the Boy Scouts of America and in the 1960s she helped lead a successful citizen campaign to save the Cape Florida lighthouse from development. Priscilla also taught in Miami Springs elementary and high schools while her sons were growing up.
Her later years were made truly golden by spending time with her grandchildren fishing, biking, boating and beachcombing. She adored Allyson (Gregg), Dan (Meaghan) and Caroline (Michael) and at the end of her life her great-granddaughter Audrey.
Priscilla is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews Sally (Bryan), Suzy, Shirley, Tommy (Carey), Patty, Mike and Steve. She was predeceased by her husband, her son Lenny, her brother Tom (Marilyn) and her sister Pat (Carl).
The family is grateful to Ann Richards and the staff at Sunny Hills Assisted Living Facility for their care and support.
To honor Priscilla’s memory hug a child, go fishing in the ocean on a beautiful summer day and visit a national park to appreciate the beauty and rich heritage of our country.
