PRESTON LLYWELLYN PREVATT's Obituary
PREVATT, PRESTON LLYWELLYN, 92, passed away on August 6, 2018, at South Miami Hospital. Preston was born in Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Florida,on April 23,1926, about 5 months before the terrible 1926 hurricane. He was the only child of Preston Gelston Prevatt and Virginia Evans Prevatt. He grew up in Buena Vista in Miami, or "Miama" as the locals called it. At age 12, moved to Rivo Alto Island off the Venetian Causeway where he lived until he was married. He remembers the Ice man delivering ice by horse and wagon. Preston graduated from Episcopal High School, near Alexandria, Virginia, the day after the allies invaded Normandy during World War II. He was called to report for duty in the U.S. Navy six days after graduation. He spent two years on active duty in an attack cargo ship ( AKA 69), which assisted in the liberation of the Philippine Islands and participated in the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. Upon discharge, Preston attended the University of Virginia, where he was President of his fraternity, Delta Phi (St. Elmo Hall.) He graduated with a B.S. degree in Commerce in 1950. In January of 1953, he graduated from the University of Miami Law School. He became a partner at the law firm of Shutts & Bowen, the same law firm as his father, where he practiced until he retired. Upon retirement Preston and Dottie built a house in North Carolina where they spent lots of time with their children and grandchildren. In August of 1953, 65 years ago, he married Dorothy (Dottie) Doyle, whom he had known since they were children. As a member of the Dade County Bar Association, Preston served as a director and treasurer. As a member of the American Bar Association, he was a delegate to its Junior Bar Conference and served in its House of Delegates for eight years. He was a Past President of the Y.M.C.A. of Greater Miami, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, and the Estate Planning Council of Greater Miami. Preston was a member of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, the Riviera Country Club,High Hampton Inn and Farmington CC., The Miami Club, The University Club, The Bath Club and The Bachelors. He had 20 years of perfect attendance with the Miami Rotary Club. Long time member of Plymouth Congregational Church. Preston was Legal Counsel Emeritus to the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and a Trustee on the James Deering Trust. Preston Prevatt was a man of integrity and strong moral character. He was a steady, reliable influence and taught his children to always do the right things. Those who knew him could always count on him. He was articulate and thought before he spoke. Preston had an impeccable memory, a generous thoughtful nature, and a sense of humor until the end. His son, Preston Jr., predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Dottie; son Robert Doyle Prevatt, his wife Bethany, and their daughter Margaretjane Preston Prevatt; daughter Pamela Reid Prevatt Woll, her husband Allen Lee Woll, granddaughter Dorothy (Dolly) Waddell Madsen, her husband David Madsen and grandson Camden Prevatt Woll; and son Reid Waddell Prevatt. Funeral services will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church on September 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life reception at the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club.
