Phyllis Girling Hudson's Obituary
Phyllis Girling Hudson was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica on October 29, 1924 to Clifford Thorpe and Beatrice Massop Hudson.
Phyllis, affectionately known as Sister Phyllis, was a seamstress by profession.
She relocated to the United States in 1962 where she engaged in many professions in order to make a better life for herself. Her hobby was making fruitcakes and she used her passion for making them and turned it into a wedding cake business. Her family looked forward to Christmas time when she would make her famous fruitcake and they would each receive a pan.
Sister Phyllis believed in service to God, others and her community. She was actively involved in her church community in Connecticut and later in Florida. She worshipped at Sunset Congregational Church, where she would usher and visit the sick. At Christmas time she looked forward to wrapping presents at the church that would be distributed to school children. She loved helping others and over the years would open her heart and home to nieces and nephews that needed support. In her late 80’s Sister Phyllis was still active in her community volunteering at the election polls in Florida.
Sister Phyllis was loved and admired by her family and she loved them. She loved family gatherings where she would eat and drink and laugh and dance, enjoying the company of all around her. She used a walker for mobility but this never stopped her from making her way to church or pushing herself around Costco to shop where everyone knew her. Her grandchildren called her the little engine that could because they saw a determined person that never complained about her situation.
Sister Phyllis lived a joyful life and was always grateful. She woke every day with a smile, and would say “thank God for another day”.
On October 15th, 2022, Sister Phyllis went peacefully to be with the Lord. She will be greatly missed by her one and only Daughter Carmen (Jean) Griffin
