It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Otto Raul Llerena Larrea, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on June 23rd 2025 at the age of 89.
Born on March 5th, 1936, Otto lived a life defined by hard work, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. He was a proud father to his three children—Violeta Rosenberg, Raul Llerena, and Silvia Freedline—and a devoted grandfather to Joshua, Daniel, Noah, Alex, Mateo, and Valeria. He is also survived by son-in-law Allan Freedline and daughter-in-law Claudia Llerena. With his loving nature, his presence brightened every room he entered.
Otto was born and raised in Lima Peru, he graduated as a medical doctor from Universidad de San Marcos. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in Endocrinology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. After finishing his training, he moved back to Lima, Peru.
Otto was an outstanding physician who dedicated his life to serving the less fortunate at Daniel Alcides Carrion Public Hospital, where he was Chief of Internal Medicine. He was also Principal Professor of Internal Medicine at University of San Marcos and served as President of the Peruvian Society of Endocrinology for many years. He had two private practices in Lima, cared for patients at Clinica Javier Prado, and was involved in endocrinology research at his Avance Medico Lab.
Otto’s life was marked by resilience and dedication. He believed in the value of perseverance and passed those lessons on to his children and grandchildren, who were his greatest source of pride. Whether offering words of wisdom, lending a helping hand, or sharing stories that spanned generations, Otto always put family first. In 1992, he left his successful professional life in Lima to be with his children in Miami, where he continued to practice at Leon Medical Center.
Otto’s zest for learning went beyond his love of medicine, spanning music, art, and culture. , An avid photographer, he travelled the world capturing beauty and culture in the remotest corners. He also loved music, and taught himself to skillfully play the Spanish guitar. He enjoyed sharing his love of gardening and photography with his grandchildren.
Otto will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his quiet strength, and his remarkable ability to make those around him feel loved and supported. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Otto’s legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, and the countless lives he touched.
A celebration of his life will be held on June 28 2025 at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, located at 11240 North Kendall Drive, Miami, Florida 33176, where we will gather to honor his memory and the beautiful impact he made on this world. A private burial service at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery will follow.
