Miriam H. Hutson's Obituary
Miriam Poe Hutson passed away on Friday, July 12, 2013, after long enduring Alzheimer ’s disease. Miriam was born 89 years ago in Loris, S.C. She was valedictorian of her high school and played on the Girl’s State Basketball Championship team. She attended Winthrop College for Women, and Duke University School of Nursing.
Miriam met her future husband, Dr. James Jackson Hutson, when he was a medical student at Duke University. They were married November 10, 1944. The couple made their home in Miami after Dr. Hutson’s release from the US Navy. The family grew with the births of five children: Poe, Jimmy, Micah, Margaret and Mark. She was a kind, gentle and loving mother, whose home and table where always open to the children’s friends, neighbors, many dogs, cats and numerous injured small animals for which she had boundless patience and an endless supply of cookies and love.
The bonds of affection with her mother-in-law, Ethel Barco Jackson Hutson, developed into an interest in community service. Miami became her adopted home town. She joined the Junior League of Miami, where she volunteered countless hours. She was active during the years in which the Junior League helped to establish the Miami Museum of Science and took special pride in the hands-on creation of the Everglades exhibit. Miriam became president in 1961.
Miriam’s dedication to Miami involved her in city politics and inspired her to run for Miami City Commission in the early 1960’s. The following years were devoted to her family, living at 1650 NW 9th St., Miami.
Her approach to life was defined by her father’s favorite poem, “Let me live in my house at the side of the road and be a friend to man.” We will miss her.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Miami, 400 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 17, 2013. The service will be followed by internment at the City of Miami Cemetery. She will rest in the family plot of family patriarch and Miami pioneer, James M. Jackson, MD.
