MILTON W. DOUGLAS's Obituary
On September 28, 1920, in New Haven, Connecticut, Wilbert Edward Douglas & Beatrice (White) Douglas, Jamaican School Teachers who had migrated to the USA welcomed their fifth child and third son. They named him Milton Wilberforce Douglas (aka Mickey).
Disillusioned with life in the USA, the family returned to Jamaica in 1922 and settled in the town Christiana in the parish of Manchester. Unaware of the move, Milton quickly adapted easily to his new surroundings. As far as he knew he was Jamaican.
His father was an avid boxing fan and nicknamed is sons after boxers. Oldest son Cedric became Jack after Jack Dempsey, Kenneth became Bill after Billy the Kid, and Milton became Mickey after Mickey Daniels.
Mickey, the youngest of the three sons, at that time, grew very close to Jack, and he would follow him around, even to school; where Jack would have to hide him under his desk. They remained close up until Jack’s death on June 17th, 2011.
He attended Middlesex Primary School, Kingston Technical High School and later graduated from Holmwood Technical High School in Christiana. After graduating he went to New Haven, CT in 1944, to live with his Uncle Eustace Douglas. Within 2 weeks of arriving in the US in 1944, he was drafted into the US Navy, where he served on various ships in the Pacific during WWII. After serving his time in the Navy he settled in NYC.
Mickey Loved sports especially cycling and soccer. He was an avid NY Cosmos fan when “Pele” joined the team. He loved Jamaica and would look for any opportunity to take a trip “Down A Yard”. There was no job that was too difficult for Mr. D. He was always working on something or trying to improve on something. The saying “One mans trash is another mans gold” was something he embraced. He would often pick up TVs radios and other discarded items to fix them. He loved to tinker.
In 1955, he married Felicita Santiago and their marriage produced two sons, Milton and Dennis. Realizing that the South Bronx neighborhood in which they lived was not the best place for his sons, he sent them to Jamaica and enrolled them in Knox College, a boarding school not far from where he grew up. In 1989 after 34 years of marriage he lost Felicita to cancer. Shortly after that he moved to Miami where he resided until his passing on June 13, 2014.
He leaves behind his son Milton (Mikey) and his wife Marjorie (Pat) and their sons Christopher, Sean, and Ian. Son Dennis and his wife Dee and their children Dennis Jr. and Cristina. Sisters Alice and Aida, Brothers Kenneth and Earl. Many nieces and nephews including Dawn and her husband Averill and their children Gillian and Ian, Kishu and his wife Joy and their children Chris, Kamla, Bobby, Kuyro and Raymond.
After a long life Mr. D. has found a resting place, quiet and peaceful.
