Miguel Americo Bretos' Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Miguel Américo Bretos Cabañas, a remarkable father, brother, husband and son on February 15, 2024. Miguel Américo was born on June 21, 1943 in his beloved hometown of Matanzas, Cuba to Miguel Américo Bretos García and Teresa Cabañas Batista. His journey on earth was one characterized by a passion for learning, honesty, and a profound respect for those who came before us. He was always modest in his demeanor, yet proud of his achievements, and his faithful and loving nature will forever live in the hearts and minds of those he touched. His love of nature, respect for all cultures and passion for storytelling, through a lens of history, are a legacy not only for his immediate family but for the thousands of students who learned from his lectures and stories.
Miguel has left behind a formidable legacy; three loving children Pilar Alexia Carvajal, Maximiliano Pedro Bretos and Fernando Miguel Bretos who were not only the recipients of his immense love but also the custodians of his wisdom and passion. He taught them invaluable lessons including the importance of respecting others, the belief that no one is superior to another, and the courage to follow their dreams. Miguel experienced a difficult immigrant experience, having left his native country as a teenager with his beloved sister Raquel to come to America to start again. He had help along the way and he never forgot those family members, friends and colleagues who helped him rebuild his family’s pride and embark on a dream career in academia. His career allowed him to be the storyteller that he always wanted to be; stories he told his four grandsons Joaquin Carvajal, Maximiliano Bretos II, Leon Bretos and Vincent Bretos and one granddaughter Alexia Carvajal .
An accomplished author, Miguel's greatest achievements were his books. Each page is a testament to his intellect and curiosity. He intended his numerous writings on history, architecture, art and nature as a gift not only to his students and colleagues but to his family so that they could always appreciate where they came from. But Miguel's legacy extends far beyond the pages of his books. His love for nature was instrumental in shaping the values and passions of those around him. The thousands of trees and plants he cultivated continue to provide inspiration and shade for people and food and shelter for wildlife.
