Michael Shawn McDermott, One of a Kind!
74 years young, of Miami Florida, passed into eternal life on
December 18, 2019.
Born on August 12, 1945, in Ft. Lauderdale Florida to Joseph
Charles McDermott & Katherine Gray. Michael graduated from Miami Senior High, Class of 1964. He joined the US Navy and served in the Vietnam War from September 8, 1964 until October 14, 1968. He served on the USS Harold J. Ellison with a rank of SNE3. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, along with other distinguished
service medals. He also served as a reservist for the military for four years. He was honorably discharged from the military. Michael joined the City of Miami Police Department on May 25, 1972 and retired as a Lieutenant on May 27, 1995. He held various assignments and duties serving with distinction and honor. Upon retiring from the City of Miami Police Department he established the McDermott and Associates
Private Investigative Service Agency. From January 8th 2001 thru May 3rd 2007 he served with the State of Florida Medicaid Fraud Control Unit as a Medicaid Fraud Investigator and later joined the Lady Lake Police Department. After his retirement, he volunteered as a Reserved Officer in the City of Sweetwater Police Department.
Throughout his lifetime, Michael provided volunteer services to his community in various organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, St. Louis Catholic Church, the Boys and Girls Club, Killian Senior High School Band Parents, Miami Rescue Mission, and many others. He also co-founded the South Florida Law Enforcement Emerald Society.
Michael was survived by his wife, Nitza; his four children, Karen, Sean, Christina, and Joseph; two granddaughters, Keeley and Kara; and his great granddaughter Skylar.
He will be loved and remembered forever for his honor, courage, integrity, and kindness.
