When 20 years of employment with Pan Am Airways ended, I thought I'd never enjoy another job in the travel and tourism industry. I was wrong.
On November 11, 1993, I was hired by Merrett as his secretary at the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. I didn't know much about Merrett but I learned a lot very quickly. I saw a strong leader who could also be a follower when called upon, a compassionate listener and an executive who was respected by his colleagues.
November 11 was and still is observed as Veteran's Day and I've often remarked to Merrett that we were veterans of several battles. He was not only my boss, mentor and confidante, he became a lifelong friend. He and Judy included me in many family activities, and I looked upon them as my adopted second family.
For me and many others, Merrett Stierheim is irreplaceable. He was unique in so many ways as evident by the many outpourings of love and kindness.
Rest in peace, dear friend, you will be sorely missed.
