Mercy: in your own words, this is the last message I received from you - ‘Hi Daniel, I’m feeling better I will go home tomorrow. Thank you for checking on me.’ This is the message you sent on August 15, 2019 at 4:23pm. Again checking back on you the following day, August 16th, you said you were already home from the hospital and are taking a walk around the neighborhood and feeling much better! But what happened? all attempts to reach you on Saturday, August 17th was in vain; and as a result I wrote: ‘Mercy, how are you doing? I have been calling but every call is going into your voicemail. We are very concerned.’ As my wife and I became very concerned came the unexpected phone call from Ekaete, Mercy’s daughter: mommy has passed!!
My thought was it is a joke, or a dream but when I heard my wife crying out loud reality set in. First, shock and then questions to what could have happened to Mercy between the Friday and Saturday.
Mercy Ibanga was a beloved friend and the closest family member we have here in Florida. She was so loving. She had the biggest heart ever, always going all out to make others happy. Ever smiling and full of life, she brought a lot of joy and sunshine to all she encountered. Her sweet personage made it so easy to love her. She was a devoted mother of three beautiful daughters- Ekaete, Mfon and Emem, and of course she was a grandma. Since I met Mercy, we talk openly about our relationship with God, our families, career and social networks. Daily, Mercy and I share prayers and words of encouragement on Whatsapp. Over the years I watched Mercy’s Christian life grow even to point she became an Usher in her local church- Calvary Chapel Kendal. Since I met Mercy many years ago, she and my family became very close and no one could tell if we were blood relatives or not. Mercy was actively involved in my decision before and after marriage. She provided advise and support when I decided to travel to Nigeria in 2015 to get married to my beautiful wife, Esther. She visited us on numerous occasions in Port St Lucie and also hosted us in her home in Miami. During our son’s dedication she was there to support us. Each time my older brother visits from Lagos, she always strived to visit regardless of her busy schedules, Mercy was indeed a family! Furthermore I witnessed Mercy blossom in her career as a nurse: she worked tirelessly to complete her BSN. I watched her study and passed the state insurance certificate examination with ease. In fact, Mercy was a woman who achieved everything she put her mind into because she was a very hard working person. Mercy was lively, a wealth of love and likable person. Your energy and enduring spirit was immeasurable.
Mercy you will be missed! May Your Soul Rest In Perfect Peace.
