MARY MARGARET ABOOD THOMAS's Obituary
THOMAS, MARY ABOOD, 93, of Pinecrest, passed away March 15, 2015. She was married to local general contractor Joseph for over 50 years until his 1998 death. She is survived by her five sons Robert (Virginia), Kenneth (Andrea), Richard, Lawrence (Sharon), and Brian (Irini); her grandsons Christopher (Alice) and Gregory (Sylvia); and, her great grandchildren Alexander and Isabella. Mary was born in Detroit, and graduated at the top of her high school class. Her father, with his old country attitude that education was a waste of time, especially for woman, refused to let her take a full scholarship to a private college. This great disappointment shaped her primary life goal: give her children the maximum possible education. Joseph, who briefly attended college but could not afford to continue, enthusiastically agreed. As a result, all five of their boys became doctors: two college professors with Ph.D.s, two orthodontists, and one optometrist, who have gone on to educate and help thousands from around world. Their total of 16 undergrad and graduate degrees made up for the two college degrees they were not allowed or could not afford to pursue. Mary's second life goal was to help establish Our Lady of Lebanon Church in 1973. She was the brainchild behind their annual festival, now in its 38th year, and also founded their Ladies Guild. Among the many accolades she received was the second Silver Massabki Award by the National Apostolate of Maronites in 1976 given to those "who have contributed extraordinarily of their time, talent, and treasure." Among her many talents was her reputation as the master of Lebanese cooking, especially pastries. A visitation and Mass at Our Lady of Lebanon Church at 2055 Coral Way will begin at 10:30 am on March 20.
