Mary Mamaies' Obituary
MAMAIES, MARY, passed away in her home on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at 7:00 a.m. She was born in Filiatra Messinia Greece. She is predeceased by her sister Haralambia and her brother Leandros. She came to the United States by way of Ellis Island in 1929 with her mother Angeline nee Lagios and her sister Edith (Kouros) to be re-united with her father Peter Giapapas who paved the way for their arrival to Chicago. Prior to meeting her husband, Mary attended a downtown Chicago business school. On a trip to her native homeland to Greece she met her husband of blessed memory, Spiros Mamaies who predeceased her on December 10, 2002. They were married on November 6, 1949 in Greece, and then they returned to Chicago in order to spend their married life. In 1957 they were blessed with the arrival of their only child and son who later would become a priest -- Fr. Stavroforos, who is the present Dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Miami. Mary took pride in her role as wife, mother, and the provider of a home life that expressed the richness of the Greek Orthodox American Tradition of the United States conservative Midwest of Chicago. Mary came with her husband Spiro to join their son who was living in Miami. Mary has been active in Saint Sophia in her stewardship, in her worship, her membership in the Seniors program, her volunteerism at the Festival, Festival Baking, in the Church Office during mailings, her attendance at Bible Class, and her membership in Philoptochos. Mary was an honorary lifetime member of H.A.W.C. (Hellenic American Women's Council), of the Adraste Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope, and of the Papanicolaou Unit for Cancer Research. Mary is survived by her son Fr. Stavroforos Mamies, her sister Edith Kouros, her sister's daughter and her husband Bill and Elaine Kepraios, their son Dean Kepraios, and their son and his wife Michael and Becky Kepraios. Visitation - Wednesday, July 14, 5:00pm to 9:00 pm, Trisagion 7:00 pm at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel. Funeral Service - Thursday, July 15, 11:00 am at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2401 SW 3rd Avenue, Miami, FL 33129. Memorial Donations.
