Mary Jane Kane, 101, of Miami, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on January 13, 2024. Jane was born on March 3, 1922 to Herbert and Jeanette Beenau in Buffalo, NY. In 1942 she enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, and after completing basic training at Camp Lejeune, she served on active duty at Miramar in San Diego, CA until the end of World War II. After the war, she moved to Miami and married Lt. Thomas Kane of the City of Miami Fire Rescue. Whilst raising her family, Jane remained an active and devoted community member. She belonged to the Curtis Park Aquatic Club where she taught American Red Cross swimming lessons to children and the disabled. She was a life member of the Women Marines Association, and chapter member of the Gold Coast Florida Chapter FL-3, where she held the offices of treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president. Through WMA she also volunteered for SafeSpace and the Miami VA, among many other causes and organizations. Her favorite place was her trailer in Key Largo, where she spent many happy days fishing with family and friends. She will be remembered for her positive and determined nature, and limitless capacity to share her love of life with others. Whether you were family or a new friend, you were always welcome in Jane’s home for coffee, games, and treats. Jane is predeceased by her husband Tom, brothers Herbert and James Beenau, and brother-in-law John Kane. She is survived by her children, Dennis Kane of Miami, Marjorie Palin of Cooper City, Janice (Vicente) Garcia of Miami, and stepdaughter Patricia (Ed) Polhemus and family of Garrison, NY, grandchildren Rebecca (Chris) Beckham and Theresa Garcia, and great grandson Oliver Beckham, along with many nieces, nephews and their families. Final resting place will be the National Military Cemetery, Bushnell. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that her memory be honored through acts of kindness towards others or a donation to a charity of your choice.
