MARTA P. NUNEZ's Obituary
Marta Petrona Nunez passed away quietly on Monday, February 16, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 87. Mrs. Nunez was born on October 19, 1927 and in Caimito del Guayabal, Cuba. Born on her parents’ farm, she was the third child of Anastasio and Modesta Castillo. The family bought a farm in the Havana province and moved there soon after. Mrs. Nunez enjoyed sewing and graduated as professional seamstress, from the “Corte y Costura” method. She taught classes for many years until shortly after the Cuban Revolution. It was around that time, she met the new “boy next door”, Luis Nunez, and they fell in love. They married soon after in February 1967. Later that year, she flew into Miami, Florida, to start a new life. She always gave special thanks to President Johnson and his Freedom Flights for allowing her and her family to escape communism. Luis joined her a year later and they settled in West Miami in 1972 where they resided together for over 40 years. Mrs. Nunez enjoyed her home and garden, where she grew mangos, avocados, papayas, and limes. Marta enjoyed her family, friends and neighbors in the tight community. She enjoyed carefree bantering back and forth with her husband, each one trying to best the other. She was also fond of her dogs and the neighborhood cats. She enjoyed eating rich, Cuban food and sweet desserts but never drank coffee. She liked a good bargain and enjoyed shopping at the flea market. Mrs. Nunez believed in honor and strength of character. She was a hard worker, rising early and going to bed late, and ensured that her children had a better life than the one she had. She was proud that she became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Ken, of Atlanta, GA; her son and daughter-in-law, George and Martie, of Burke, VA; and four grandchildren, Garrett, Melissa, Makenna, and Margaret Peyton. She is preceded in death by her husband, Luis; and her brothers Miguel Castillo and Cervilio Castillo. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015, from 4-6 p.m. at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, located at 4600 SW 8th St. in Coral Gables. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mrs. Nunez’ life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimers’ Fund. Firme y adelante, huesped de la fe, que Jesus nos ve.
