Kathryn and I were enjoying a bourbon (Knob CreeK) while on vacation in Glen Arbor, Michigan. We left a bottle for Uncle Mark during a pleasant visit to Miami. I thought of Mark and emailed a picture of Knob Creek so he could "join" us in a toast. To our delight, Mark was amused and emailed a quick reply in real time.
Uncle Mark was that kind of gentle, caring man. He enjoyed clean humor and he was always ready to receive or send good cheer! He appreciated the "Jacobi factoid" that Abe Lincoln played in the real Knob Creek as a boy in the hollers of Old Kentucky and that the Jim Beam distillery is only a 45 minute drive from our house in Southern Indiana. And, not to mention, he enjoyed a shot of Kentucky bourbon (when his health permitted.)
His genuine interest in OTHER people is what made Uncle Mark so interesting, knowledgeable and fun to be with!
On Saturday, Kathyrn and I will share our memories with some Knob Creek and think of Mark Zimmer who enriched our lives with good listening ear for anyone with a story or just plain ol' family conversation. Should I mention, that Ol' Abe had that quality, too?
Here's to the best of Uncles!
