Marjorie T. Haggard's Obituary
HAGGARD, MARJORIE TUMLIN, passed away December 17, 2008 in Miami, Florida. Born on May 22, 1917 in Macon, Georgia, she was the daughter of Dr. Corbit Edward Tumlin and Gertrude Holloway Tumlin. The family moved to Miami in 1919, when Marjorie was two years old. Her father joined the medical practice of Dr. William A. Haggard who later became her father-in-law. Marjorie attended Cushman School, Miami Senior High School, Brenau Academy in Georgia, Florida State University and Brenau College. She eloped with her long time love Curtis Haggard in 1936, and they moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Curtis graduated dental school. They returned to Miami, and had two children, Patricia and William Andrew. A leader in community and civic activities, Marjorie was Province Chairman of sorority Alpha Delta Pi, traveling extensively throughout the South. She served two terms as president of the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club and founded Junior Girls, a high school service club. She was instrumental in forming the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club Dental Clinic for Children and also participated in the founding of the Women's Dental Auxiliary. In 1949, Marjorie was the Dade County Woman's Finance Chairman for Dan McCarty's1950 campaign for Governor of Florida. A life long Presbyterian and member of Coral Gables Granada Presbyterian Church, Marjorie is survived by her sister Julia Wheeler, daughter Patricia Holdcraft (Tom), son William Andrew Haggard (Carole), grandchildren Curtis Jay Mase (Angie), Daryl Ann Place (Alex), Michael Andrew Haggard (Bekki), Rebecca Marjorie McCarron (Doug) and seven great grandchildren. Marjorie loved her children often saying "First you hold them in your lap and then you hold them in your heart." Private services were held on Tuesday, December 23, 2008.
