MARILYN MAYES HICKS's Obituary
Marilyn Mayes Hicks January 13, 1937 - December 20, 2025
On Saturday, December 20, Marilyn Mayes Hicks, 88, of Coral Gables, Florida passed away from kidney failure. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Donald J. Hicks, and survived by her daughter, Laura Hicks Roberts (Jeff); her son, Jeff Hicks (Charlotte); grandchildren, Andrew (Maddie), Amanda (William), Sarah, and Abigail Roberts, Hanna, Sebastian, and Axel Hicks; and great grandchildren, Sage and Wesley Roberts. Mrs. Hicks was born in 1937 and raised in Coral Gables, Florida. She was the daughter of Thomas and Bernice Mayes. She had one brother, Tom Mayes, who predeceased her. She attended Gables Elementary and Ponce Jr. High before graduating in 1955 from Coral Gables High School. In 1959, she graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. After graduation, she started her career as a home economist at FPL. She met Don after his transfer to Miami, and in 1961, the two were married. Children followed in subsequent years, and family became her focus. In 1981, Mrs. Hicks joined the College Assistance Program (CAP) as a counselor at Gables High. She took great joy in helping countless students apply to college and secure financial aid until her retirement in 2004. Her greatest joy came from time with family. She guided her life and career to be truly present in the lives of those she loved most. She was never too busy to be the Girl Scout Cookie Mom, to host her children's friends, or to attend her grandchildren's school happenings. Weekends with friends at the family home in Stiltsville were a favorite. She was a devoted friend to many, always having time to listen and be of service. She loved playing bridge and canasta and had many weekly games. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Mrs. Hicks was active in the community, chairing many Kappa Kappa Gamma conventions, serving as President of the Junior League of Miami, and chairing the Scholarship Committee at the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hicks was an active member of the Professional Employer Organization (PEO) and volunteered with the Counseling Ministries Program. She was a member of Riviera Country Club, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and the Laurel Ridge Country Club in Waynesville, NC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables (536 Coral Way, Coral Gables, FL 33134). In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Scholarship Program at the Coral Gables First United Methodist Church through https://www.welovecoralgables.org/give.
