MARIA ANTONIA LLANES's Obituary
Maria Antonia Llanes, loving daughter to America Diago Agüero and Carlos Antonio Llanes and sister of America Sevilla de Garcini and spouse Jorge Garcini, was born in Havana, Cuba on January 22, 1923. She graduated from the Ruston Academy and went on to work for Cuba’s Supreme Court after attending vocational college.
A strong, independent woman, devoted mother, and selfless friend, Maria Antonia left Cuba in 1961 with her children to build a new life the United States. She worked with the Cuban Refugee Program, aiding her community wherever she could. Later, she would retire from the State of Florida Health Department after over 25 years of service to lower income families.
Maria Antonia was a member of the St. Dominic Catholic Parish. She was an avid lover of music, dance, and cinema. Always elegant and funny, she loved to travel to beautiful locales with her friends, who she loved dearly.
She is survived by her children, Jorge Cano and Ana Maria Cano-Mirabal and their spouses Soledad Schneegans Cano and Jose Manuel Mirabal, as well as her grandchildren Nicholas Mirabal, Michelle Mirabal, Sarah Mirabal-Fritz, Michael Cano, Christina Cano and her great granddaughter Vivian Mirabal, who knew her as Abuela Cucú.
A Maya Angelou quote best exemplifies her legacy: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. Maria Antonia made people feel loved and relevant.
Viewing will be held on September 29, 2025 from 5:00 – 9:00 pm at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, 4600 SW 8th St, Coral Gables, FL 33134.
Burial will take place on September 30, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Caballero-Rivero Woodlawn North Cemetery, 3260 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135.
