Margaret McCrimmon Carr's Obituary
CARR
Margaret Mizell McCrimmon, age 96, died at home on January 22, 2009. She was a native Floridian, born at her family home on SW First street in Miami, December 26, 1912. She was delivered by Dr. Jackson, the namesake of Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was a 1930 graduate of Miami High, where she was the class Vice President. She attended Florida State, and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in 1960. She lived most of her life in Miami up to World War II when her wartime duties took her to other cities. Eventually she and her beloved husband Marvin settled in Atlantic Beach Florida for a fourteen year period before returning to Miami in 1960.
She started her teaching career in Dade County at Riverside Elementary School when she was only 19 years old. She took a break from teaching children during World War II to become an aircraft avionics maintenance instructor. She returned to teaching in elementary school while living in Atlantic Beach and finished her career in Dade County at Ludlam Elementary, retiring in 1972.
Mrs. Carr was very happily married to Marvin Carr for 63 years. They loved to travel, swim, spend time at the beach and enjoy their garden. Their home was a place where people always felt loved and invited. They relished having friends and family visit. Her daughter’s childhood friends still remember the welcoming spirit in the Carr home.
She was active in her church, teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school and participating in the women’s group activities. She was a charter member of Shenandoah Presbyterian Church, also a member of Atlantic Beach Presbyterian and Old Kendall Presbyterian. She was a member of the Coral Gables Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Regent in 1983-1984. She also participated in activities as a member of the Gilded Lilies. She was an avid reader and enjoyed book discussions. She was a devoted mother to her daughters and a wonderful grandmother to four granddaughters. Her greatest joy came from the times she and Marvin were able to spend with “their girls.”
She is survived by daughters Margaret Burke and Evelyn Williams, their husbands Steven Burke and Ron Williams, her grand daughters Stephanie Yarnell, Meg Hartwig, Emma and Kelly Williams and one great grand daughter Leonie Moon Poole.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, brothers C.T. and Steve, sister Ruth and sisters-in-law Becky and Dorothy. A memorial service will be held for her on Friday, July 3rd, 4:00 p.m. at the Beckett Chapel of St Thomas Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Historical Museum of Southern Florida Society or the Gilded Lilies.
