Margaret Chapman Jones' Obituary
Margaret Chapman Jones of West Miami died Feb 7 at the age of 104. She was born in Havana, Cuba, on November 11, 1918, to Ernestine Barth Chapman of Canada and Roy Wilson Chapman of Texas. Growing up in Havana, Margaret competed and won many medals in diving competitions and later a gold medal at the Pan American Games. She then attended and graduated from Texas Woman’s University.
She worked for Pan American World Airways as an executive secretary for the VP of airline operations in Miami. There she met her future husband, Thomas J. Jones, an Engineer for Air Inc Global Communications. She and Tommy spent many hours in recreational sailing in a boat he designed and built.
They were active participants in the Florida Porsche Club, where they participated in many road rallies. She was a member of the Orchid Society of Miami and the Pan-Am Retirees Club, where she had many friends. She enjoyed playing Bunko and Mexican Train Dominos with her friends.
She donated a large collection of historical papers and airplane cabin memorabilia from Pan Am to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
She was known for her striking good looks and compassion, taking care of both Tommy’s mother and her own mother and father as they aged.
She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas Jones, four brothers, Leigh M. Chapman, Roy W. Chapman Jr, Rob L Chapman and Lipscomb L Chapman. Nieces, Barbara Chapman Penland, Tania Chapman Haines and Nephew Steve Chapman.
She is survived by nieces and nephews: Joan Chapman Fulcomer and James Fulcomer, Evelyn and Roy Chapman, Al Haines, Fred and Amy Chapman, John Chapman, Michael and Linda Chapman, Cris and Charles Flay. Also many grand nieces and nephews and their families.
