Hyacinth was born in British Guiana, and then the family moved to Jamaica. While her father did have a dream of farming, he became a shopkeeper in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It was here that she worked in the family store and kept her schooling after hours. After WWII she applied to Popular Hospital School of Nursing, and was conditionally accepted, if she passed her exams in London. She entered with the class of 1952. Upon graduation as a State Registered Nurse, she entered the University of Edinburgh, graduating as a State Certified Midwife in 1953. In 1981 she graduated from Brigham Young University as a Nurse Practitioner, and then from University of Miami in 1982 as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Hyacinth loved books, and she loved every aspect of learning. She worked as a Nurse and Midwife in Scotland and England, in Jamaica, Regina Saskatchewan, New York City, Miami, and in Hammonton, NJ. She became an ARNP and Midwife to help others, and after retirement, worked with DWB and PeaceCorps to bring help to other countries, primarily in Central America.
Hyacinth and her husband Ted met at a party in Vancouver, BC and were married in 1958 in New York City at the Little Church Around the Corner. They were active in all aspects of their children's lives, hosting wrestlers from Japan, Mexico and Argentina, traveling to wrestling tournaments or football games to support their children. They encouraged all their children to attend University, paying their way, as they both believed in advanced education. After the children left home they traveled extensively throughout the world; China, Thailand, Korea, most European countries, the Middle East and of course across the USA visiting their children as they too traveled and lived around the world.
Hyacinth's ashes will be placed with her loving husbands. A memorial service will be on the 30 May at the Van Orsdel funeral home in Kendall, FL.
