My deepest condolences to the family. I knew Len Helmers professionally. He was the true epitome of institutional knowledge and a famously straight shooter. It was truly amazing to meet someone who had been working for the City of Miami Public Works for longer than I had been alive - and who remembered absolutely everything. Equally important, he was someone who was approachable so that we felt comfortable asking him when we couldn't find the answers anywhere else. Even after he retired, a jurisdictional question came up, and the answer that came back had notes in Len Helmers' handwriting, having been compiled by him years before. When I earned my professional license, Mr. Helmers made a point of coming to congratulate me and shake my hand. That gesture, coming from him, meant a lot. I felt that he welcomed me into the profession. He will be missed.
