Leo Vela's Obituary
Leo Vela, 68, of Miami, Florida passed away at his home on August 25th, 2021.
A South Florida radio icon whose legendary career spanned over five decades, Leo was the pioneer of bilingual radio effortlessly blending English and Spanish in a way that reflected his legion of fans in his home town of Miami. A musician and nightclub DJ that transitioned to radio in the late 70’s first with Disco 96X and later with Super Q, Power 96, Salsa 98 and El Zol in South Florida as well as successful stints in Texas, Illinois and New York.
Known as “The Mix Master” and “The Voice” with his signature catch phrases “Gosa Now” and “La Descarga Continues”, Leo is one of the most beloved and well known radio personalities in Miami Radio history. His generosity and genuine persona earned him the adoration of the music industry’s biggest stars and the average man- and especially woman - alike.
He was proceeded in death by his father Leo and his two brothers Orlando and Carlos. He is survived by his mother Carmen, sons Leo, Carlos and Bryan and daughters Carmen, Angela and Casey, 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
