Kathleen Viola LeVay's Obituary
Kathleen Viola Veronica LeVay passed away peacefully on March 5, 2019. Preceded in death by her husband Ernest LeVay.
She was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica on August 22, 1919. She was the youngest of the five children of Christie Leonora Carmenia Hussey and Hugh John Thompson Darby. When she was three her mother passed away and her maternal grandmother, Elfie, raised her and her siblings. She is preceded in death by six siblings and is survived by her half sister Merle Kirlew.
In July 1944, she passed her examination of the Jamaica Examining Board for Nurses and in January of 1945 her midwifery examination. The family owned the Richmond Hill Inn in Montego Bay where she worked throughout the 1950s. From January 1968 to September 1975 she managed the Coral Cliff Hotel in Montego Bay. In September of 1975, she emigrated to Miami and married Ernest Levay the next month. She was an active member at International Community Church and Immanuel Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed growing African violets, peti point, crocheting and caring for children. Although she had no children of her own, she was the beloved aunt of many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces, great grand nephews and extended family members. She will be remembered for her tenacity, strength, kindness, and witty humor.
The funeral service will be held at Miami Vineyard Community Church on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 9 o’clock in the morning with interment at the Miami Memorial Park Cemetery to follow.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Disabled Veterans of America.
